The Brown County Art Guild is located in Nashville, Indiana. The center of scenic Brown County, Nashville is an Indiana treasure reknowned for its beauty and rich artistic heritage.
Nashville is conveniently located between Indianapols, Bloomington and Columbus, Indiana, and easily accessible from the north via IN 37/IN 135S, from Bloomington via IN 45N, or from Columbus via IN 46E. The Guild is housed in a beautiful restored home, and is located in the heart of downtown Nashville on Van Buren Street. |
As early as 1870, artists came to capture the beauty and enjoy the peace of Brown County. They worked closely together, learning from each other. Some were transient, but many stayed and made Brown County their home. Those early days were not easy. Living conditions were very primitive, but the spirit, principles, and quality of art were nobly established.
The first Brown County art association was incorporated in April 1927 with Carl Graf as president, and for a number of years, it was the only art association in the county. However, in 1954, Marie Goth, V. J. Cariani, Carl Graf, Genevieve Goth Graf, Curry Bohm, Georges LaChance and others formed the Brown County Art Guild, Inc. Carl Graf served as first president of this art association as well.
The Art Guild was struggling when it purchased the historic Minor House in 1967, but members continued to exhibit some of the finest art to be found in this area. By that time, Genevieve and Carl had died. Two years later, in 1969, Cariani also died, and Marie was left with paintings from all of these estates. When Marie died in 1975, she left the majority of her estate to the Art Guild. As she requested, a memorial room was added to exhibit the art of Marie, V.J., Genevieve and Carl. After extensive renovation, the beautiful gallery that exists today is a direct result of Marie’s thoughtful legacy.
Today the Art Guild maintains an impressive permanent collection and is committed to its mission: to exhibit, store and preserve works of art in the Marie Goth Collection; to exhibit works of art created by past and present guild artist members; and to cultivate fine art appreciation and education.
